Description
Essay titled, "Sikh Settlement in the Lower Mainland of B.C.," by R. A. Dutton produced as part of Geography 449, the Department of Geography, University of British Columbia. The essay includes an overview and analysis of the changing Sikh community on the Lower Mainland from 1904 to 1964, including their first establishment, struggles in settlement, organizational and community developments, to shed light on the emerging changes throughout these years. Information for the essay was obtained in two stages - firstly, from written material such as books, pamphlets and newspaper clippings, and secondly, through interviews with four pioneer Sikhs who had arrived in 1905, namely, Saran Singh, Kartar Singh, Naranjan Singh, and Ram Singh Bains.
