Description
Newspaper titled, "The Prairie Link: Voice of South Asians", issued in January, 1984. The newspaper covers a range of socio-political reports concerning the South Asian Canadian community. Topics include the controversial hiring policy of Edmonton's Yellow Cab Company, which refuses to employ Sikhs wearing turbans and beards. Also includes the Sikh Centre's Community Concerns Conference in Edmonton addressing issues such as immigration, racism, and communal identity; followed by articles discussing public opinions and organizations on multiculturalism, human rights, the Commonwealth's call for peace, liberty, cultural solace, and revised measures for assessing refugee claims. A highlighted article on page 8 titled, "Hindus threatened by Bhindranwale," discusses a political threat by Sikh militant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale to slaughter Hindus in Punjab in response to the Jai Hindu Sangh's ultimatum for Sikhs to leave Rajasthan (East Indian state) by December 5th, 1984.
