Description
Paul Binning was an activist who helped connect arts, culture and labour activism. He was one of the first professional Bhangra dancers in BC, teaching many Canadian-born youth through his Richmond based dance troupe, the Punjab Cultural Association. In this clip, he describes how despite its strong historic working-class associations, not everyone in the community appreciated Bhangra’s role as a labour organizing tool. He defended what he called “revolutionary Bhangra”. The images depicting performances at CFU events are used with permission of Craig Berggold. The bhangra music heard in the background is archival sound from an actual CFU conference, recorded by and used with permission of Gary Marcuse (file held at the Royal BC Museum). This clip is from a full-length interview conducted by Dr. Anushay Malik on behalf of the BC Labour Heritage Centre's "Union Zindabad!" Project, 2021.
